Not only he was there every time the team needed him, but Matteo also seized every opportunity he got in 2016, and this led to one of his most memorable wins, his first on home soil. It happened at the Giro d’Italia, where a daredevil descent and a wild chase carried him to victory in the town of Pinerolo.
In 2017, Matteo – the most Flemish of the team’s foreign riders – would like to keep getting better and feature in the finale of Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix, the two Classics he loves so much: “I want to be more at the front, finishing in the top positions and prove that I can have a go one day in these races. Flanders and Roubaix are two great Classics and for the rest of my career I will try to win one of them.”
