In his first year with the Quick-Step Floors Cycling Team, Marcel returned to his very best, reconfirming his status as one of the world’s top sprinters. It all started in the sunny Dubai, where he won two stages and the general classification, and continued throughout the spring with several emphatic victories, including a record fourth Scheldeprijs. Then, at the Giro d’Italia, he sprinted to two other wins and got to wear the maglia rosa, the first German in a decade to do so.
A few weeks later, Marcel took one of his finest ever victories, this time at the Tour de France, in the town of Limoges, following a sprint on an uphill drag, a confirmation of his raw power and fast legs. The German concluded the year where he kicked it off, in the Middle East, at the World Championships, where he was part of the 6-man squad which emerged victorious in the team time trial.
